Grade 12 student clinches 3-peat win at PH math olympiad

A 12th grader at Grace Christian College won a prestigious national math competition for the third year in a row.

Bryce Ainsley Sanchez defeated more than 2 dozen other finalists at the 23rd Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO), which took place online March 19-20, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said.

With his victory, Sánchez will represent the country in the International Mathematics Olympiad (OMI), a world mathematics championship for high school students.

12th grade student Steven Reyes from Saint Jude Catholic School was the first runner-up in the national competition, behind Sánchez.

Reyes has been a consistent national finalist in previous PMOs and a silver medalist at the International Physics Olympiad in 2018 and 2019.

Tenth grader Raphael Dylan Dalida from the Philippine High School of Science placed third. He was the first runner-up in last year's PMO, as well as a bronze medalist alongside Sánchez at last year's IMO.

"Bryce's performance is even more remarkable and exemplary given the challenges that everyone, especially students like him and his competitors, have faced over the past year," said Josette Biyo, director of the DOST Institute for Science Education.

Organized annually by the Philippine Mathematical Society, the PMO is a nationwide math competition for high school students competing for the honor of representing the nation at the annual IMO.
